What are the official spellings of the characters' names?
Within the English-speaking Slayers fandom, there is a great variation when it comes to which spellings are used for certain characters' names. In America, the most common variations are "Ameria/Amelia," "Suifeed/Ceiphied," "Saillune/Seyruun," not to mention several others. How should the names be romanized from their original katakana spellings? If the names were translated literally, there would be spellings like "Rina Inbaasu" and "Gaurii Gaburiefu." Obviously, that doesn't work. The names could be translated any way, thus resulting in spellings such as "Phiria" and "Amelia." It looks like the best bet is to go with the official romanization that appears on Slayers merchandise in Japan. In this case, the names appear consistently with spellings such as "Ameria Wil Tesla Saillune," "Zelgadiss Graywords," "Xelloss," "Garv," etc. In cases where there aren't any official romanizations, it's wise to use other names as examples. On Lost Universe merchandise, "Vorufiido" is romanized as "Vorfeed." Logically, "Suifiido" should be romanized as "Suifeed" or even "Ceifeed" instead of the commonly-used "Ceiphied."
What is the correct name for demons/monsters/etc.?
The correct spelling is "mazoku." It is not "mozaku," "mazoko," or any other spelling. "Mazoku" translates to "evil clan," but it would be kind of silly to call a single entity a "clan," so it stays untranslated. "Monster" and "demon" are not accurate translations, as there are other non-mazoku creatures in the Slayers world which are called monsters and demons.
What is the official name of the first movie?
"Slayers: The Motion Picture" or just "Slayers." "Slayers Perfect" is a fan-made name that is not official.
What is Xelloss' last name?
Xelloss has NO last name. It is common to see English-speaking fans say his last name is "Metallium," when in reality that is part of the name of his master, Greater Beast Zelas Metallium. NEVER in ANY official Japanese text or script does Xelloss have a last name.
Is Zelgadiss part mazoku?
No, Zelgadiss has absolutely NO mazoku in him. He is 1/3 human, 1/3 rock golem, and 1/3 blow demon. Blow demons are not mazoku. This misunderstanding most likely arised when English-speakers tried to translate "mazoku" as "demon."
Are Zelas Metallium and Luna Inverse friends?
Absolutely not. Chances are, this rumor started when fans saw the eyecatch from NEXT that showed Luna walking with a wolflike dog. People may have thought that this was Greater Beast, whose beast form has wolflike features, but it was not her. The dog is in fact Dilgear, who, after being defeated in the first series, came back to life (as he predicted) and wandered the streets starving until he found Luna, who fed him. In exchange for living with her, he has to put up with being called "Spot." When Lina eventually came home, she had a good time laughing at him.
Did Luna teach magic to Lina?
No, Lina learned magic at the Sorcerer's Guild. There's really nothing that indicates that Luna is a sorceress- she's more of a practitioner of "might" than "magic." She is, however, very skilled with blades (swords, knives, etc.).
How strong IS Luna?
Mr. Kanzaka stated that she could easily defeat Raltark (Garv's priest). He later stated that she could also defeat Xelloss (twice as strong as Raltark). So, she is stronger than all the generals and priests, but not as strong as Ruby Eye's subordinates themselves.
What's the fourth series of Slayers about?
For the last time- THERE IS NO FOURTH SERIES! A couple of years after TRY ended, Takashi Watanabe, the director, issued a statement that he was happy to see so many Slayers fans after its end, and that he hoped to either make a new series of Slayers or Lost Universe. However, this never happened. In fact, chances were better for a new Lost Universe than a new Slayers- the second Lost Universe was in the planning process, but was frozen because of insufficient funding.
When does Premium take place? How about Knight of Aqualord?
There is no established time that Premium takes place. However, if it HAD to be placed somewhere within the TV series timeline, it would logically be between NEXT and TRY, as Xelloss is present and Gourry still has the Sword of Light. As for Knight of Aqualord, it is another alternate storyline to what happened after the events that happened in what would be considered the NEXT part of the novels. So now there are three of these alternate storylines- the actual storyline in the novels involving Dynast Grausherra and Luke-Shabranigdu, the TV series TRY, and the manga Knight of Aqualord.
Is Naga Ameria's sister?
Yes. Naga's real name is Gracia Ul Naga Saillune. Mr. Kanzaka has admitted this, yet not in any official sources. There are several allusions to this relationship in the TV series. The first, and most obvious hint, was in the original episode 17 where someone dressed as Naga walked in front of the camera, and Ameria turned around, looked at the person, and then looked puzzled for a moment. There's also the fact that whenever Naga meets Gourry, Zel, and the rest of Lina's party, Ameria is nowhere to be found. It's a bit of a running joke to give as many hints as possible that show their relationship, all while never admitting to it.
On whom was Jiras based?
Jiras was not modeled after Starfox or any other character. His appearance was modeled after Takashi Watanabe's cat, Holly (even though Jiras isn't a cat; he's a red fox). There is a picture of Holly on the Studio Nekonanban Slayers TRY Memorial website. Click here, and scroll to the bottom of the page.
Is Zanafar a mazoku?
No. Zanafar is a type of living armor that, if used correctly, can protect the human wearer from mazoku attacks. The reason why Xelloss was trying to destroy Claire Bible copies in NEXT was because inside the Claire Bible is instructions on how to make Zanafars. If there were enough Zanafars allied with humans, hundreds of mazoku, even high-level ones, could be wiped out.
Can mazoku fall in love?
Mr. Kanzaka has never said if they can or cannot, but logically, they can't. Mazoku must absorb negative energy from mortal beings (humans, elves, dragons, etc.) in order to survive. Any happy or generally positive emotions which are absorbed can be lethal. Despite what some angst-filled teenagers might say, love is usually a very positive emotion. By the way, it isn't valid to state that mazoku can love because dragons can hate, because dragons aren't the opposite of mazoku.
Are golden dragons shinzoku?
No, they are not. Golden dragons- ANY type of dragon, for that matter -are as mortal as humans, elves, etc. are. The golden dragons may align themselves with shinzoku (i.e. the Karyuu-ouzoku in TRY), and they may use holy magic, but they aren't gods.
Is Gourry part elf?
No. The first movie may have implied that it was necessary for Lina to save Meliroon so that Rowdy and she could produce offspring that would lead to Gourry, but it would be impossible. Elves age very slowly, so by the time that Meliroon would be old enough to have children, Rowdy would be an old man. Mr. Kanzaka said that Rowdy later married a human woman. Maybe it was necessary to save Meliroon so that Rowdy wouldn't be too depressed over her death to go find another girlfriend.
Is Xelloss also Zelas Metallium's general?
No, he is only called a priest, but he also has the powers of a general, as Zelas doesn't have one.
Was Xelloss once a human?
Definitely not. A high-level mazoku such as Greater Beast would NOT consider recruiting a human as her priest. Mazoku see humans as scum to be feasted upon. A good analogy for this states that a mazoku having a human as its priest/general would be akin to the president of a large corporation having an ant as its vice president. It would never happen.
Is Deep Sea Dolphin insane? Is she L-sama's favorite? Is she hated by Greater Beast?
No, no, and no. Disproving the first and third of these claims, when Dolphin and Zelas appeared together at the end of the 15th novel, Dolphin did not behave strangely, nor did Zelas not get along with her. As for the second claim, why would the Lord of Nightmares even care?
Is Filia the last golden dragon?
No, but she is the last Karyuu-ouzoku (follower of Firelord Valbazard). There are still golden dragons elsewhere in the world, like the ones at Dragon's Peak (i.e. Milgazia) which worship Aqualord.
What exactly IS the Lord of Nightmares?
Well, I can tell you that she isn't one of the following: mazoku, shinzoku, ryuuzoku, human, elf, troll, werewolf, demon, monster, pokemon, elephant, palm tree, rock, or anything else like that. She isn't affiliated with any political party (i.e. the mazoku or the shinzoku) and enjoys hitting subordinates over their heads with random objects.
How are Slayers and Lost Universe connected?
It depends on which versions you are referring to, the anime or the novels. We'll start with the anime. Dark Star Dugradigdu and Night Dragon Vorfeed fought for years in their world. When they got tired of fighting, they hid inside spaceships. Many years later, humans discovered these ships (called "Lost Ships"). Vorfeed's ship, Swordbreaker, fought with Dark Star's ships. Some of Dark Star's ships were destroyed and scattered across the four worlds. Swordbreaker found where Dark Star himself was, and tried to destroy him. However, he wasn't completely gone, and he started destroying the universe again. Vorfeed was tired of fighting, and after both entities realized that they were doomed to fight forever, Vorfeed gave up and was absorbed by Dark Star. They thought that it would be better to just destroy the world rather than keep fighting over it forever. Vorfeed's servants, Armace, Erulogos, and Sirius, didn't know that Vorfeed had changed sides, and went to the world of Shabranigdu and Suifeed to find the last two ships of Dark Star (which had by then turned into weapons of light). They also wanted to bring Dark Star into that world, so that he would be weakened enough to destroy. This is where Slayers TRY starts. At the end of TRY, Dark Star and Vorfeed were destroyed for good, and Sirius returned to his world with the Lost Ships/Weapons.
In the novels, the only real connection was when Fibrizo took the Sword of Light from Gourry and sent it to Dark Star, who was its real owner. In the Lost Universe novels, System Dark Star was a computer program within Lost Ships that was simply named after the legendary ma-ou, and System Vorfeed was the computer program, named after the legendary enemy of the ma-ou, that could neutralize System Dark Star. They weren't actually supernatural beings, while in the anime version, they were.
Is our real world one of the four in Slayers?
It's not known (there is no official answer). However, there are hints in the Lost Universe anime which may prove that we are in Dark Star's world. In Lost Universe, Earth, Mars, and other planets in our own solar system exist, and people live on them. It's just an alternate telling of what goes on in our own universe.
